Our E3 Predictions - How Did We Go?

Every year here at The VG Island, we make some E3 predictions, and then take a look back at them to see how well we predicted what the three major console companies revealed/showed. E3 2014 was a big one. There were many game reveals, some easily guess-able and others not so much. It marked the second year that Nintendo opted to have a Digital Video instead of a live Press Conference. Here are the results from our E3 Predictions! BLUE means correct, GREEN means we were half correct and RED means we were wrong.

Mxboxe31014

  • Halo 2 Anniversary announced with a late 2014 release date. (Sort of. The Master Chief Collection, Featuring Halo 1-4 i n HD was announced instead)
  • Forza Horizon 2 shown (Yep)
  • A brand new, exclusive game will be anounced for Xbox One (Scalebound from Platinum Games and Crackdown 3 were announced)
  • Halo 5 trailer shown (Yep, more of the game was indeed shown)
  • Quantum Break will be shown, as well as Sunset Overdrive (Sort of, Sunset Overdrive was shown, Quantum Break not shown)
  • There will be no Gears of War announcements (Yep, no announcements of any kind at this stage)
  • A new User Interface will be shown for the Xbox One (Nope)

Possible Third Party games

  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be shown (Yep)
  • Mass Effect may make an appearance (Not here, but it did at the EA Press Conference)
  • Fallout 4 or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim HD are also possibilities (Nope)

sonye314

  • Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain new trailer (Yep)
  • Destiny will be shown (Yep)
  • Uncharted 4 slight teaser (Yep)
  • New IP from Guerrilla Games (Nope)
  • New God of War for the PlayStation 4 (Nope)
  • Introduce the ability to change PSN names (Nope)
  • PlayStation Now will be discussed (Briefly, but it was definitely discussed)
  • Project Morpheus may appear (Yep)
  • The Order: 1886 will be shown (Yep)
  • Driveclub will be shown (Not really shown)
  • The Last Guardian for sure (Abandon all hope for this one folks)

Possible Third Party Games

  • Fallout 4 or The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim HD may appear (Nope)

Nintendoe314

  • Presentation will open with a Super Smash Bros. trailer (Yep)
  • Brand new character for Smash (Krom, Impa, Krystal, Bayonetta) (Sort of. While none of these characters were announced, we did get an announcement of Palutena and the Mii Fighter)
  • Returning character for Smash (Ness, Captain Falcon, Meta Knight) (Nope)
  • Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will be shown (Yep)
  • Pokémon fighting game announced (Nope)
  • Smash Bros Wii U Bundle (Nope, but I guarantee this one is coming!)
  • New F-Zero game (Nope)
  • Advance Wars for 3DS (Nope)
  • Yarn-Yoshi re-revealed, November 2014 release (Re-revealed as Yoshi’s Wololy World, but 2015 release)
  • Bayonetta 2 will be shown (Yep)
  • X trailer, 2015 release date (Yep)
  • Mario Party 10 for Wii U (It was announced! Just not during thee Digital Event)
  • NFC toys for Wii U (Maybe compatible with Smash Bros.) (Yep)
  • Shin Megami X Fire Emblem will be shown (Not really shown, but still present kind of)
  • Hyrule Warriors dated and named (Yep)
  • Wii U Zelda will be teased (Yep)

So how did we do? Generally speaking, our safe predictions pretty much came through and our wild ones were simply not to be. We did make a few seemingly random predictions that did come true, such as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Project Morpheus making an appearance at the Sony Conference, and Yarn-Yoshi being re-revealed, but all-in-all, they were pretty safe predictions.

[E3] The Last of Us E3 Trailer Shows Us What Naughty Dog's Been Working On.

Dark Chronicle / Dark Cloud 2 (PS2)

DarkChronicle

Tracks:
Never-Ending Adventure, Gundorada Workshop, Veniccio, Battle for the Future.

Composer(s):
Tomohito Nishiura

Released as Dark Cloud 2 in North America, Dark Chronicle is the sequel to Dark Cloud by Level-5 (White Knight Chronicles, Professor Layton). It is composed by Tomohito Nishiura, one of my personal favourite video game composers, who also worked on the soundtrack to Dark Cloud, Rogue Galaxy, White Knight Chronicles and the Professor layton Series. Nishiura has a distinct style that echoes through all he’s video game compositions.

Never-Ending Adventure

The introduction song to Dark Chronicles is a perfect summary of the entire adventure thats experienced in the game. The song plays during the introduction video to the game and is a great away for players to get a sense of what the game is going to offer. Its a large, grand game with many locations and the introduction song helps sum up the entire experience.

Gundorada Workshop

One of the many locations in the game, Gundorada Workshop is a huge area with mechanical buildings and elevators. The OST version of the song is slightly different, with the In-Game song being a little more atmospheric. This version is the OST version.

Veniccio

Veniccio is a location in the game that is situated near a beach and has that distinct vibe to it. The track is slightly similar sounding to a track called ‘Queens’ from the original Dark Cloud and both locations have some similarities to them. Its an upbeat song with the emphasis on the rhythm guitar and the melodic woodwind instrument.

Battle for the Future

I chose a fourth track for this weeks VGM of the Week because the soundtrack to Dark Chronicle is very broad and has some really great tunes. Battle for the Future is one of the most powerful songs on the soundtrack and is played during many of the boss battles in the game. It is one of the stand out tracks.

[E3] Checklist - How did we do?

Before E3 began this year, we posted a prediction checklist for what we thought each major console company would reveal at their respective press conferences. Below are our checklists and which of our predictions were correct, and which were definitely wrong.

Microsofte3

Out of our Microsoft E3 predictions, we did pretty good. Out of 13 predictions we were right about 6 of them. Firstly, they did show Halo 4 of course, but didn’t show Kinect integration. Although, Kinect integration will be available. Apart from that, most of it was rather straightforward.

Sonye3

Sony was next and out of 15 predictions, we guessed 6 again. No BioShock, no Gran Turismo, no The Last Guardian, no Final Fantasy and no Kingdom Hearts.

Nintendoe3

Lastly, Nintendo held their conference and out of 20 predictions, we guessed 9. During the conference a lot of focus was put on the Wii U and no brand new Nintendo games, apart from Pikmin 3 and Nintendo Land, were announced. None from Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, F-Zero or Kirby.

The previously rumoured Wii U redesign of the controller is now official and can be seen below alongside its 2011 counterpart. Also, a black version of the controller was also visible during the presentation.

Alongside this announcement, Nintendo also revealed a new controller named the ‘Wii U Pro Controller.’ This controller is said to offer a more classic take on video game control, and looks quite unique and practical at the same time.

Lastly, Nintendo discussed a little bit about its upcoming network system, which will include a system titled ‘Miiverse.’ This will work a social connection device where players can interact with friends and others around the world and will show players who are playing certain games. For example, an icon will appear representing a certain game. Crowded around that icon will be all the Mii’s from players who are playing that game at that time. You can then chat with those people and discuss the game in general, or ask for help if you are stuck in a certain area. Also, when you chat with other people, you can use the Wii U GamePad’s touchscreen to type, or you can even use the screen to draw an image, much like the 3DS’s SwapNote application.
