Cave Story

Cave Story
Tracks:
Cave Story (Plantation), Moonsung, White

Composer(s):
Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya

Cave Story is one of the most well known and well loved Indie Games of all time and was designed, written and composed by Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya in his free time. It’s a testament to he’s talents that the game has been rereleased many times, and that even though he created the games story and design, he was still able to compose such a brilliant soundtrack.

The first track is titled ‘Cave Story,’ also known as ‘Plantation,’ and is the main theme to Cave Story. Every aspect of cave story is supposed to be an homage to classic game that Daisuke played in his youth, such as Metroid and Castlevania and this track captures the essence of that time quite well. It’s very reminiscent of music that accompanied those classic games, but doesn’t actually sound like any of those songs. It takes inspiration from them, but also stays true to being unique.

The second song, ‘Moonsong,’ gives me chills when I hear it. After fighting through roughly three quarters of the game, your character finally emerges outside of ‘The Floating Island’. Its such a relief to see the air blowing, the sky and the clouds after being stuck within the island for most of the game. The moment when you hear this song is like a sense of satisfaction, but also knowing that there is still much to be done on your journey.

The final track, ‘White’ is another well written song from ‘Cave Story.’ It’s a mellow song that has a brilliant melody and an interesting beat to match it. Seriously just listen to it. These three songs are some of my favourites that have ever been featured in VGM of the Week and I can’t stress how much I believe each song adds to the overall game experience.
