SuperMarioLand SuperMarioLand2

Tracks:
Mario Adventures I, Mario Adventures II (Super Mario Land)
Athletic, The Moon (Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins)

Composer(s):
Hirokazu Tanaka (Super Mario Land).
Kazumi Totaka (Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins).

Super Mario Land is a strange entry in the series. It has some weird levels and interesting enemy designs and the music in the game is a touch different that other games in the series, but also still has that distinct Mario vibe.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a more modern Super Mario game in every sense. It has a world map (similar to Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World), it has a better sprite size and it has a save function.

I chose these two games as the first Mario games to feature in VGM of the Week because they are such different games un the series, especially the original Super Mario Land. Also, both games are currently available on the 3DS Virtual Console store.

Super Mario Land

Mario Adventures I

The main track from Super Mario Land is also the more ‘true to form’ track that plays during the game. It’s the most ‘Mario’ song on the soundtrack, you could say, and is played in the very first stage of the game.

Mario Adventures II

This track is very different from past Mario songs, and sounds more like a true ‘pop’ song. It has a simple structure and has a distinct focus on its melody. Its a song ahead of it time in my opinion.

Athletic

One of the frantic songs on the soundtrack, Athletic is played throughout a number of stages in the game, usually the more fast stages, where running fast and jumping with quick reflexes is the suggested method.

The Moon

A track that is very different to Athletic, The Moon is a more slower song, but its played through one of the most difficult levels in the game and listening to it now brings back memories of being a frustrated kid struggling to finish the game.
