Video Game Music of the Week - 62

Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo DS)

Theme of Professor Layton, Mysterious Girl, Something Happens

Tomohito Nishiura

We’ve featured composer Tomohito Nishiura two times before, with our VGM of the Week features for both games in the Dark Cloud series. There is a clear style that is expressed in every soundtrack that he works on and he has worked extensively on the Professor Layton series, being the major composer for every game, as well as the movie Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva.

Theme of Professor Layton
The staccato-like piano intro sets the mood for what is easily one of the best themes that the composer has created in his long stint with the
Professor Layton series. The violin and accordion play off each other quite beautifully and set the absolute benchmark for the entire game.

Mysterious Girl
There is a lot of meaning behind each note and the song is a perfect example of a tune that has the ability to shape the way you feel or experience something. The accordion is featured again, but this time in a more slow and sombre capacity.

Something Happens!
The track opens with a constant alternating bell melody that gives you a sense of urgency and the opening also introduces the accordion yet again into another track. There’s a very focused melody featured in the tune and the simple backing from the bells help to amplify the main tune.
